Slot – A Position and Strategy
A slot receiver lines up in the slot area of the football field, a few yards behind the outside tackle or tight end. This is an important area for quarterbacks to attack, since it allows the offense to target all three levels of defense: the line of scrimmage, the linebackers and the secondary.
On passing plays, the slot receiver is expected to run precise routes that correspond with the other receivers in the offense. They may be asked to run slants, sweeps or quick outs.
They are also effective as blockers on running plays, where they are in a position that allows them to provide extra protection for the running back. This is particularly true on outside runs, where they can pick up blitzes from linebackers or secondary players.
The key to successful slot play is a high level of route-running ability and speed. They should have top-notch hands and be able to get open quickly, even if the defense is using multiple tacklers.
One of the biggest pitfalls for slot players is getting greedy and chasing winning streaks. While it’s fun to win, don’t keep playing unless you’re sure it’s a long-term strategy and that you can afford to lose the money.
